Victoria’s Secret Show Beauty Secrets

“The vision was very California girl,” Victoria’s Secret makeup artist Lauren Cosenza, who made up Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio and the other models, tells UsMagazine.com. “Lots of sunkissed, dewy skin, glossy lips and flirty lashes.”

Want to recreate the carefree beauty for yourself? Cosenza provided Us with some pointers:

FACE

Cosenza prepped the Angels with VS PRO Airbrush FX Primer ($14) then followed up with VS Soft Focus Foundation ($16). To add contour, she dusted VS Bronzer/Highlighter Trio ($14) under the cheekbones and followed up by applying a mix of the two darkest shades of the VS Eye Shadow Quad in Eye Contact ($15) on the top of the cheeks up to the side of the nose. “The look is a girl who got a little too much sun with her shades on,” she explains.

EYES

To make the models’ eyes pop, Cosenza applied three coats of VS PRO Voluptuous FX Mascara ($12) — “Do not be shy, coat it in,” she says — then lined the lower lashline with shimmery white VS Eye Liner in Bright ($8). Then she mixed the two darkest shades of the VS Eye Shadow Quad in Eye Contact ($15) and applied to the crease of the eye and added a mix of VS Brilliant Shimmer Shadow in Golddust ($10) and VS Eye Shadow Quad in Sultry ($15) under the lower lashline. The final touch? Running VS Lip Gloss in Glow ($10) through the eyebrows and over the browbone. “It gives a lush, dewy effect,” she says.

LIPS

Cosenza dabbed VS Lip Liner in Foxy Brown ($8) and VS Lipstick in Icon ($12) to the center of the lips and blended outward, then finished off the look with a coat of VS Minerals Lip Gloss in Naughty ($10). “It creates a very alluring pouty effect,” she tells Us. “A just-bitten stain!”

Clear Skin Tips

When it comes to skin, no amount of cosmetics or concealer can really take the place of healthy, clear skin. Some of the most beautiful makeup looks incorporate fresh, glowing skin and lighter or translucent foundation. Such looks aren’t really an option without clear skin underneath. Heavier makeup can be great for a photo shoot or a special event, but no one wants to be forced to cake on that much makeup every single day.

If you struggle with problem skin, or if you simply want to maintain clear skin consistently, you can begin to clear up any problems by incorporating proper clear skin tips into your daily skin care regimen.

Essential steps to clear skin:

1. As part of your clear skin routine, cleanse twice daily using a gentle but effective facial cleanser. Don’t use regular body bar soap, since they actually tend to lead to more problems (dryness, tightness and signs of aging). Also, don’t wash your face too frequently – dryness and irritation will result, leading to more problems. Simply cleanse your skin using an acne-preventative cleanser for the face. After washing your face, use a high quality facial toner. As the final step in your routine, use an oil-free facial moisturizer. Brands such as Dove, Cetaphil and Neutrogena are just a few brands that have affordable skin care lines with quality products. Be gentle and try a few different brands until you find the right one for you. When trying a new brand, allow several days to a week to see if you notice improvement, before giving up and switching to a new one.

2. Try acne treatments with key ingredients, until you find the one that works best on your skin. Use the product all over your face if appropriate – don’t just “spot treat.” If one works, don’t just use it until your skin is clear. Use of the product should continue as a preventative measure, or your acne will most likely return. Look for some of these common effective ingredients in your product:

- Salicylic Acid: slows abnormal skin cell shedding (that clogs pores and creates pimples) and unclogs pores
- Alcohol combined with Acetone: the acetone degreases and the alcohol kills bacteria
- Benzoyl Peroxide: reduces the bacteria in acne and removes excess dead skin cells that clog pores
- Resorcinol: often combined with sulfur (has a strong and distinct odor), controls acne lesions

3. Keep your hair clean and out of your face, and also try not to touch your face too often. Both your hair and hands carry oils and bacteria that can add to current skin problems and also cause new ones.

Remember, the right kind of skin care regimen is the answer to treating and preventing problem skin. With attention and discipline, most people can obtain beautifully clear, creamy skin. Since healthy clear skin is one of the most desired beauty essentials, your efforts will be more than worth it.

If your breakouts do not improve or go away by following upon these tips for clear skin, you may need to get an appointment with your dermatologist or family doctor for a clear skin solution. They may be able to give you further help or medications designed for more serious acne issues.

Getting Your Beauty Sleep!

Attention beauties: Never underestimate the importance of getting enough sleep! Getting adequate sleep plays a crucial role in not just your mental functions, but in your physical appearance as well. The amount of sleep you are typically getting is displayed in your general appearance, your weight, your skin and also your stress levels. Don’t write off the phrase “beauty sleep” as a simple cliche. It holds far more truth than most people know.

SKIN:

Sleeping gives your body a chance to repair itself on the cellular level. As you sleep, extra protein molecules are produced to rid your skin of pollutants and infections while they simultaneously rebuild the cells that allow you to wake up refreshed with radiant skin. Think of the days you don’t get enough sleep. You pull yourself up with puffy, bloodshot eyes surrounded by dark circles. You don’t get the necessary sleep to allow the molecules to repair yesterday’s damage. Getting the right amount of sleep is the proven “anti aging” miracle we all dream of.

WEIGHT:

Now you can stop feeling guilty when you go to bed early and skip your daily workout because proper sleeping habits can help control your body weight. When you sleep, the hormones that regulate your appetite are placed back in control, possibly ridding your thoughts of those nasty cravings. When you deprive your body of sleep, your body naturally craves sugar and carbohydrates as a defense mechanism to jolt you awake. For those of you who can’t seem to shed those last five pounds, try hitting the hay an hour early.

STRESS:

Of course, the best way to feel beautiful is to not feel stressed. Stress hormones are released during the day as a result of today’s fast paced lifestyle. These hormones have physical effects on the body as well. Excessive stress is a common cause of the degeneration of internal organs as well as the aging of your skin (aka: wrinkles!). Sleep helps to reverse many of these effects as it maintains a state of relaxation.

OVERALL HEALTH:

The average adult needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, but it varies depending on the individual. Not getting enough sleep results in a whole bunch of problems, but too much sleep also makes it more difficult for your body to enter back into its functioning mode.

How much an individual needs is dependent on many factors. Here are some things to keep in mind: Women often require an extra hour in the week before they begin menstruating and during pregnancy. Genetics also play a part in determining your specific needs. The amount of time it takes your body to reach the phase of deep sleep where the benefits are received is often hereditary.

The best way to find out what works best for you is to take into consideration your individual situation based on the criteria above. And then, experiment. If you often feel groggy, try going to bed earlier. If you habitually go to sleep early, sleep late, and still wake up unrested, try staying up an hour later. While “beauty sleep” is often used in regards to women’s needs, it is vital for everyone. Get your sleep and you will wake up energized, beautiful, and healthier.

Nine Days to Less Stress, Gorgeous Skin, and a Whole New You

We just adore Dr. Amy Wechsler’s book, The Mind-Beauty Connection: 9 Days to Less Stress, Gorgeous Skin, and a Whole New You. Nine Days to Less Stress, Gorgeous Skin, and a Whole New You As a dermatologist AND psychiatrist, Dr. Wechsler understands the connection between our stress levels and our skin. Her book shows you how to minimize stress, simplify your life and look younger. Excessive stress literally causes you to age more quickly. It has an immediate effect on the condition of your skin and over time, will actually cause you to look older than other women your age.

In her book, Dr. Wechsler discusses how to reverse stress aging. She explains the importance of managing and reducing cortisol, a substance in your body that breaks down collagen and causes wrinkles. She shows you a simple nine-step plan: Simplify (simplifying your skin care regimen and other parts of your life), Relax, Go Green (the cortisol reducing benefits of nature), Eat Clean (eliminating some of the junk), Make a Move (exercise), Foster Friendships (the importance of emotional care and healing), Pamper Yourself (my favorite), Sleep In Beauty (getting your beauty sleep and letting your wrinkles heal), and Reflection (a before and after skin age test). She discusses why each step is important, helps you to understand the benefits, and explains the parameters of each (how much sleep or exercise you need, etc). She also shows you the different ways you can incorporate each one into your busy life. Here’s to better skin and less stress!!

Makeup Brushes: What to Know Before You Buy

You already know that you need to use a brush to properly apply makeup but not just any brush will do. If you have ever tried to use those sad little brushes that come inside of eye shadow or brush compacts, then you know that some brushes are better than others. Buying a cosmetics brush is not just a matter of running to the drugstore and grabbing a brush that looks like it is the right size. You need to put a bit of thought into your selection or you can end up wasting a lot of money. Here are some helpful tips for choosing cosmetics brushes.

• You should always buy the best quality makeup brushes you can afford. Yes, they can be pricey but this is one case where you really do get what you pay for. Good makeup brushes are an investment. Bad brushes need to be replaced more often and can irritate your skin.

• Natural bristles are generally better than synthetic ones. They also cost a lot more. Natural bristles are a must for large areas of the face but if you need to save some money, you can get away with synthetic fibers for any brushes that will be used with liquids.

• Pay attention to the material of the handle. Plastic is very easy to clean, which is important when you are working with liquids. Wooden handles, on the other hand, are more elegant and traditional but it can be very difficult to get stains out and these require extra drying time after washing. It’s really a matter of personal preference.

• Consider the density of the bristles in relation to the intended purpose of the brush. Stiff, tightly-packed bristles are a must for an eyebrow shading brush but softer bristles work better for applying loose powder all over the face.

• Look at handle length. Longer handles are easier to work with whereas shorter handles travel better.

Concealer brushes can be synthetic if you are using them for liquid or cream concealer. Look for a small brush with a tapered round tip for covering blemishes and a flat, tapered square head for covering dark circles under the eyes.

• A good blush brush will be significantly larger than those that are usually included in the packaging of most blushes, yet not quite as big as a powder brush. Look for soft, natural bristles with a tapered head.

• If you are new to brushes, you might want to purchase a brush set from a reputable brand. Brands like MAC and Shu Uemura are considered some of the best. If your budget is smaller, you might want to try Sonia Kashuk or Essence of Beauty. Brush sets take some of the guesswork out of brush selection and are a great way to get a collection of useful brushes together. This often works out to be cheaper than buying them individually as well.

A Review of Becca Cosmetics

Becca Cosmetics is an Australian makeup line originally developed because founder Rebecca Morris Williams was frustrated in her search for the perfect foundation. The lines foundation formulas have since become beloved of makeup artists and consumers alike, but Becca also offers a wide range of color cosmetics as well.

Many women complain that they cannot find a true color match in most foundations. Most lines tend to ignore very pale or very deep skin tones, or they ignore undertones, such as warm or cool. Therefore, someone with dark cool skin may find that the darkest foundation looks too orange, while someone with pale warm skin may find that the lightest shade is far too pink. Becca’s foundation stick comes in thirty different shades instead of the typical eight or twelve, thus increasing the chances that you will be able to find the perfect color. All of the Becca Cosmetics base products for the face contain SPF as well.

Becca Beach Tint is often featured in magazines and has been praised by makeup artists; the shade Watermelon is a fabulous pink that gives the perfect summer flush. A multi-use product, it can be used as a stain on lips and cheeks. This product has been named an Allure Best Beauty Product.

In fact, Becca offers many multi-use products, from shimmer powders to highly pigmented cheek crèmes that double as lip colors.

The Becca look is toned-down, a bit earthy, but still glamorous and quietly chic. By creating the perfect canvas with the tinted moisturizers and foundations, you really don’t need a lot of bright, loud colors to accent your natural beauty.

These products from Becca Cosmetics may be slightly harder to find, but they can be purchased in certain department stores, in makeup boutiques, and of course, online. If it seems like none of your foundations look right or perform the way you want them to, why not check out Becca?

Benefit Cosmetics: High Beam Highlighter

When it comes to getting fresh glowing skin, Benefit High Beam can’t be beat. This liquid highlighter from Benefit is one of the most popular highlighters on the market for a good reason. There are many highlighters out there and most of them are duds. It’s a product that’s hard to get right. Instead of a youthful glow, many highlighters give a greasy shine. Others have noticeable chunks of glitter that look ridiculous in sunlight. Even the ones that do look alright tend to clog pores. Benefit got the formula right when it created High Beam. This is definitely one of our top Benefit makeup picks.

High Beam comes in a small bottle with a brush attached to the lid, similar to the packaging of nail polish. However, it is easier to apply it with your fingertips as that gives you more control over where you apply it and makes blending easier. For the most natural look, dab the brush onto your fingertips and then dot the product onto your cheeks, brow bone, and the bridge of your nose and then blend it in an outward circular motion using your fingertips. It is fairly long lasting which means you won’t need to touch it up during the day. However, it is easy enough to tuck the bottle into your purse just in case.

In the bottle, the liquid looks a bit on the pink side but when applied, it makes your whole face look brighter without any trace of pink. The color works even on the palest of skin tones. The popularity of High Beam has also led to the creation of a warmer-toned version, Moon Beam, which looks particularly nice with a deep tan.

Benefit’s High Beam is a great way to get radiant skin without looking shimmery or oily. It is subtle enough to wear during the day, but it’s easy to get a dramatic look by applying it with a heavy hand for a night out. Like other Benefit Cosmetics products, it doesn’t irritate sensitive skin or clog pores. Overall, this is a well-rounded highlighter that really delivers on its promises. Just a small amount of product can totally transform your face from dull and tired to bright, awake, and glowing.
